Townlands Memorial Hospital has a lovely new coffee shop, The Coffee Bean for patients to enjoy a cuppa and snacks whilst waiting.
Jan Wilson has opened the cafe, in a room which was originally planned for a dentistry service who pulled prior to the hospital opening in 2016 and laid empty up until now. Jan said, “I came to the Rapid Access Care Unit (RACU) upstairs with a friend and whilst the staff were lovely at making us a coffee, we didn’t like to keep asking as we were in the unit for most of the day and thought they could with a coffee shop. About 18 months ago when I was running the halfway hut at Mapledurham golf course, one of the nurses said, we could do with something like this at the hospital which is when the conversation started with Amber Healthcare Solutions at the hospital.”
As well as all the various coffees and teas you would expect in a coffee shop, Jan offers a great food menu too which includes sandwiches, paninis, salad bowls, jacket potatoes and soup of the day. She also sells cakes, biscuits, cold drinks, fruit, crisps and chocolate.
The cafe is open Monday to Friday 8.00am to 5.00pm Jan added, “I think it I was in the right place at the right time and so far it’s going well and it is being well received by the patients. They seemed to like what they are getting and all in all we are on a nice steady incline.
Starbucks and Costa were approached to run the cafe but they said they weren’t interested as there wasn’t enough footfall for them.
“The coffee shop at Townlands has been an excellent addition. Many patients had asked if we had a similar facility and it’s good that we can now offer this.” Stephanie Greenwood, Patient Pathway Manager at Royal Berkshire Foundation NHS Trust.
An NHS Property Services spokesperson said: “After working closely with Jan, we’re delighted to welcome the Coffee Bean to Townlands Hospital so patients and staff can enjoy a hot drink during these cold winter days.”
