Garden Competition Entries Are Surprised With Awards on Doorstep

Residents who entered their front gardens into the Henley in Bloom garden competition last summer were surprised on their doorsteps this week with their award certificate and a goodie bag from Chair of Henley in Bloom, Councillor David Eggleton.

David said, “Because there are still a lot of people nervous about attending events, we decided to put together a video of the awards instead of holding our normal event at the Town Hall.  The goodie bag contained a USB stick with a video of myself and Kellie Hinton announcing all the awards, the judges comments and photos of the gardens so that people can watch it in the comfort of their own home and enjoy it with a glass of wine, some crisps and chocolates that were in the goodie bag too.”

We went with David to one of the Gold winners, Susan Goodall who lives on Harpsden Road.  In 2019, the Herald chose Susan’s garden for their On the Spot Award. Her garden was described by the judges “as a magical palette of colour when it became full bloom in mid-Summer with so many open flowers, a huge mixture of flowers and colour.” Susan said,  “Yes I think winning that award did encourage me to enter after I won and other neighbours said I should enter.  It’s a big and very nice surprise to win Gold. I’ve started doing my seeds already this year and they’re growing really well.  I think I’ll probably enter again this year.”

The 17 entries all received garden vouchers to spend.

Another Gold winner Keith Thatcher of Market Place who had previously won the overall competition said, “I’m over the moon to win Gold again and receive the prizes.  I want to though donate my garden vouchers to a community project in Henley.”
