Marsh Lock Footbridge Closed Due to Safety Grounds

The Thames footpath is currently closed at Marsh lock south of Henley-on-Thames. The closure of the Marsh Head Horsebridge footbridge is required on safety grounds and has been implemented by the Environment Agency who will be undertaking detailed investigations into the elements of concern and also programming mitigation works where practicable.

This closure is likely to be for a few weeks from today (6th May 2022).

The diversion is lengthy to avoid the A4155 which has limited footpath. There is the hourly bus route between Henley-on Thames and Shiplake (bus route 800), which will allow you to avoid having to walk along the A4155.  There is also a regular train service between Henley-on-Thames and Shiplake.

The diversion route on foot from Henley end is to proceed West along Mill Lane, then cross the A4155 and proceed along the Bridleway until you reach Harpsden Way. Turn left and South along Harpsden Way passing St Margaret’s Church. Where the road forks turn left along Woodlands Road, and then left again along the Bridleway until it emerges back on Woodlands Lane. Walk along Woodlands Lane until you reach the junction,  turn left and East along Bolney Lane, which is also the ‘Chiltern Way’. Follow the ‘Chiltern Way’ across the A4155 until you re-join the Thames Path.

Last time the bridge was was closed for sometime, there was a temporary footpath from opposite the Mill Meadow car park, behind the river-facing houses, and back down to the river across the field. Will do this again?
