St Mary’s Lose on Penalties in Final of Football Festival

A team of St. Mary’s Year 5 and Year 6 children took part in the ISA 6 a-side Football Festival at LVS School in Ascot this week, competing against 14 other schools in the U11 category.

Rob Harmer, Headmaster: “Our children have the opportunity to play in weekly competitive sports fixtures from Year 3 onwards, and it is wonderful to see how this helps develop not only their sporting skills, but builds their confidence and resilience. I am very proud of how well our team played, narrowly missing the opportunity to go through to the national finals.”

The team got off to a strong start, with an emphatic win against Lycée International School B 3 – 0. Following a game against Rosemead Prep, St Mary’s beat Shoreham College 3 – 0, earning them a place in the Cup knock-out stages. In the Quarter finals, they played North London Grammar School, beating them 1 – 0 with a superb save from the St. Mary’s keeper in the last seconds of the game, to enable them to progress to the Semi-finals.

Playing Lycée International School A resulted in a 1 – 1 draw, leading to a round of very tense penalties, with St. Mary’s confidently scoring all 3 of their penalties to Lycée International’s 2 and a place in the final!

In a closely fought final match, St. Mary’s played Rosemead Prep, whom they had narrowly lost to in the Group stages. It was a fantastic game of football to watch, demonstrating passion, skill
and tenacity. Rosemead took an early lead with a brilliant solo goal, but a confident penalty saw St. Mary’s draw level and the game finished 1-1. So penalties were once again used to settle the teams, with the scores level after all 6 players had taken a penalty, it was down to sudden death – St. Mary’s stepped up and the ball went wide of the post. Rosemead managed to convert their next penalty and the victory was theirs.

Despite the disappointment of losing the final, the boys were incredibly proud of their achievement. A superb day of football, excellent teamwork, great goals and amazing saves – picking up a silver medal is something that the team should be very proud of!
