Henley Hawks Show Resilience in Face of Exertis’ Dominance

Henley Hawks won the toss, but it was Exertis that got off to the better start. Hawks took a bit of time to settle into their game and despite working the ball down the court nicely, they struggled to create scoring opportunities. At the other end of the court, excellent balls into the D and accurate shooting from A. Brand helped Exertis take the lead 14 goals to 4 at the end of the first quarter.
Henley Hawks’ C. McCarthy and N. Stubbs took some fabulous interceptions in the centre court, and Hawks’ shooting duo A. Jacob and E. Robinson began to find their rhythm with some excellent movement in the final third. However, C. Moyses and A. Taylor for Exertis continued to apply enormous pressure and were rewarded with interception after interception. Hawks added 6 to their total, but Exertis pulled away. The score at half time 33 – 10 to Exertis.
Hawks made several changes at half-time – A. Southwell on at GA, E. Robinson to GD and S. Filby to WD – which paid dividends. Southwell’s movement in the centre of the court and partnership with A. Jacob in the shooting circle helped Hawks almost double their score. However, Exertis also stepped it up gear. There was fierce competition in the centre court between Exertis’ K. Parr and Hawks’ J. Goforth, and despite the heroic efforts of C. Hopper and E. Robinson and several tips A. Brand, ably assisted by J. Eatwell, extended Exertis’ lead. The quarter ended Exertis 55 – Henley Hawks 19.
The final quarter, continued in the same vein. Despite interceptions by Hawks up and down the court, and some fantastic shooting (in increasingly windy conditions) by A. Jacob and A. Southwell, Exertis were unstoppable. Hawks just couldn’t compete with Exertis’ height and reach at the two ends of the court, and what was an excellent team performance.
Final score Henley Hawks 27 – Exertis 71.
