Men’s 2s Dominate Student Side in 7-1 Win
Coming off a narrow and heartbreaking last minute 1-0 loss to the league leaders Sonning last week, Henley stepped onto the pitch against Oxford University determined to bounce back and make a statement. Remarkably, the sun shone brightly over Jubilee Park, a surprising reprieve given that Storm Eowyn was raging across the country. The calm over Henley’s game seemed to mirror the weather, as the team came out composed and took immediate control, dictating the pace of play and dominating possession.
However, hockey is a cruel game, despite their early control, a turnover in midfield allowed Oxford to break forward on the counter, earning a short corner. Henley’s defence initially stood firm, with the post-man making the first save. Unfortunately, the rebound fell kindly for Oxford, and they capitalised to take an early lead.
Henley, refused to let their heads drop. Their response was swift and clinical, with the experienced forward duo of Richard Woolfrey and Geoff Joseph combining to win a short corner. Up stepped Fergus Heggie, who’s perfectly executed drag flick levelled the score at 1-1.
Building on that momentum, Henley pressed forward and soon earned another short corner. A misjudged injection might have spelled disaster for Henley but the highly experienced U55 vet Dan Herbert was quick to react, hammering a powerful strike into the bottom-left corner to give Henley the lead at 2-1.
The one-goal advantage didn’t seem to satisfy Henley however, and they continued to control possession and push Oxford deeper into their own half. Their pressure paid off with a third short corner. Once again, Fergus stepped up, delivering another pinpoint drag flick into the top-right corner to extend the lead to 3-1. Richard Woolfrey then added his own contribution to the scoreline with the kind of composed rebound finish that only years of experience (and countless hours of practice) could produce. By halftime, Henley were smiling at 4-1, and the team huddled with the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for pub quizzes and post-match pints.
The second half began with a more determined Oxford side, who came out applying much higher pressure in search of a way back into the game. Henley’s defence, however, held firm. Brandon Smith and Matthew Herbert were commanding at the back, snuffing out attacks and keeping Oxford’s forwards frustrated.
At the other end of the pitch, Henley’s attackers continued to create chances. Richard Woolfrey showed his class with a well-timed finish for his second goal of the game, pushing Henley further ahead. The short-corner routine remained Henley’s weapon of choice, with three more opportunities arising in the second half. Dan Herbert added another goal with a near-identical strike to his first, drilling the ball low into the bottom-left corner with precision.
Robbie Farina tried to mix things up with an ambitious lob shot from a left slip, only to see it batted away by a sharp save from the Oxford keeper. But Fergus wasn’t done yet. Seizing another short corner opportunity, he coolly converted his third drag flick of the match to complete a well-earned hat trick.
When the final whistle blew, Henley celebrated a 7-1 victory, a result that reflected their solid performance on the day.
