How to design a timeless kitchen

Depending on your family life at home, your kitchen might see a huge amount of use. Even if you don’t cook very complicated meals or spend a lot of time in the kitchen, you still want a kitchen that’s functional and looks nice, and ideally, a kitchen that you don’t need to constantly redecorate and update as time goes on.

With this in mind, here are some ideas so that you can design a kitchen that will stand the test of time. This means you won’t get bored with it, it won’t look tacky and out of date once a few years pass by, and it will ideally be resistant to wear and tear. Your kitchen will look exactly as you want it to look, even years later.

Materials That Last

For a timeless kitchen, you need to think about what materials you’ll use. Cheaper materials might look nice, but they might break down after only a few years, meaning that you have to update your kitchen all over again. Instead, consider your kitchen an investment.

By getting higher-quality materials that are designed to last, you can have a kitchen that can last a lifetime, or at least a couple of decades, before you even consider updating it.

For example, quartz countertops look amazing in a kitchen. They’re also often cheaper than some other stone options, but last just as long. Engineered stone is designed to last, and quartz countertops have a 25-year warranty, meaning you don’t need to worry about chips, scratches, or water seeping through.

You should also think about other aspects of your kitchen, like the cupboards and cupboard doors, the flooring in the kitchen, and the walls and backsplash.

Style Over Trends

One huge design mistake that people often make is chasing trends. You want a modern look, so you get a kitchen style that’s really popular at the moment. But once the trend passes by and the next big thing is in, your kitchen will look outdated very quickly.

Instead of only choosing a kitchen because of a current trend, you should think about what you like. This might happen to coincide with what’s currently popular, but it’s important not to mix up your taste with the current trend.

Create an inspiration board with different designs and focus only on the styles that you’re most interested in. Your sense of style changes much more slowly than the current trend, so even as time goes on and tastes change, you will still love your kitchen because it reflects your personality, not a season.

Neutral Palettes

If you want a modern-looking kitchen, even a few years after you installed or updated it, the best option is to use neutral colors as much as possible.

Bear in mind that neutral colours don’t always mean “greige”. There’s a whole range of colors to choose from that sit in the neutral spectrum, including muted blues, olive greens, even pinks and oranges. Or, yes, grey and beige. Don’t just pick what’s popular, pick what you like.

Pick what you like, and consider colours that complement each other but that also allow you to introduce more interesting features and bright splashes of colour. Modern and timeless doesn’t have to mean boring if you don’t want it to.

A restrained kitchen design with a lot of interesting detail is going to be far more timeless than a kitchen that clashes for attention or that disappears into functional blandness.

A Functional Layout

Speaking of functional, you should bear in mind that practicality is by no means a bad thing, especially in a kitchen. The layout of your kitchen should be something that goes completely unnoticed because, if you’re aware of how your kitchen is laid out, it’s probably because some bad design decisions have been made along the way.

The layout should flow naturally, allowing you to navigate your kitchen and cook as smoothly as possible, without having to get past awkward placements.

For a couple of examples of bad layouts, think about kitchens that have nowhere near enough counterspace to actually prepare food, or kitchens that don’t allow you to open the fridge or cupboard doors fully.

Plenty of Storage

Another way to make your kitchen more functional is to add as much storage space as possible. This also keeps your kitchen looking nice, because if everything has a place, you have no need for clutter on the countertop.

Cupboards for ingredients, spices, appliances, pots and pans, cutlery, crockery, along with everything else you need to prepare and eat food, are a must-have, but they very quickly fill up. A lot of people decide to invest in a kitchen pantry for a truly timeless kitchen design.

A kitchen pantry is a convenient way to store things that you don’t need for every meal. It’s a lot more storage that’s out of the way, but easy enough to access. A pantry is great for dry ingredients, and if you pickle or ferment food at home, it’s a safe place to store your projects. You can also keep small appliances in the pantry.

Timeless Design Ideas

There are a few design ideas that walk the line between being traditional and modern, allowing you to have a more timeless look in your kitchen. These include:

  • Shaker furniture and cupboards, which often have traditional features but with a contemporary feel
  • Neutral colours, which tend to go well with a lot of design features
  • Standout features like a pantry or a kitchen island, which look great and add functionality
  • Wood-heavy designs, which can look traditional and natural, especially when paired with stone

Allowing for Customization

While you might not want to have to completely refurbish your kitchen every few years, there’s nothing wrong with tweaking it a bit. You can change smaller design features like cupboard door handles or even the doors themselves yourself, and with very little effort or investment, and it can breathe some fresh air into your kitchen without making a huge change.
