U16 AFC Henley Hurricanes Bring Down the Curtain on the Season in Fitting Style

U16 AFC Henley Hurricanes 2 – 0 U16 Woodley United Hammers

Woodley kicked off this entertaining end of season finale determined and confident of getting a result, particularly as the previous two games between these sides this season were both three all draws. The pace was frantic from the start, with the visitors demonstrating their strength and impressive attacking speed down both flanks.

Woodley’s high pressing game frustrated Henley throughout much of the first half with precious few opportunities for the hosts to establish a rhythm of passing and searching runs from the midfield players of Ben Stodolnic, Gabriel Langford and Pawel Kaczorowski. Shots came from outside the box with Sam Clarke’s powerful strike well saved by the Woodley keeper, and Pawel shooting just wide of the post.

Despite the threats down the flanks from Woodley, it was their lack of attacking quality in the final third, an impressively strong and well organised defensive line of Hilary Lunn, Seemit Gurung, Alec Strickson and Ed Lawrence (c), and a string of fine saves from Sam Butler, which kept the game goalless as the teams headed into the half-time break.

In the second half, Henley’s patient, dogged approach and hard work was finally rewarded with a goal when Jake Jones’s pass across the box found Ethan Pearce in space to drive the ball low past the keeper in the 55th minute.

With the balance of the game tipping in Henley’s favour, and Sam Alexander on for Seemit, Henley drove home their advantage ten minutes later when Jake picked up a typically perfect pass from Gabe, swept past the Woodley defenders, and drilled the ball into the corner of the goal.
