Mel & Colin Retire From The Sarries After 25 Years

Mel and Colin Roberson stepped down from behind the bar at The Saracen’s Head (The Sarries) on Saturday and enjoyed a retirement party with all their regulars.

They came to The Saracen’s Head in 1987 from running a pub in Mortimer near Reading for 7 years with daughter, Charlotte who was only 6 months old at the time.

Highlights over their years have included Ed Sheeran visiting the pub on the Brakspear Ale Trail in 2019, winning the Brakspear Golf Day in 2018 and Henley in Bloom best pub Garden competition in 2015, 2016 and 2019.  The pub was featured in a Sky TV ad after Mel entered a competition in 2021.  Well known for their sports inside (pool and darts), in 2020 Colin decided in lockdown to install French boules pitch in the garden which proved a hit. There was one unfortunate highlight which was when the pub had to close due to a chimney fire in December 2017 however thanks to the Henley Fire service it reopened the next day.

Mel said, “As you can imagine it was very emotional but every generation since we’ve been there turned up. I will be taking December off to settle in and looking for a part time job in the New Year.   Colin is looking forward to playing golf and reading more.”

Jess McDonagh who has been a regular for many years said, “I loved going to The Saracens under Mel and Colin as it is a lovely family friendly pub. I have been going since I was about 7 or 8 and even had my first 18th drink there.  I want to wish Mel and Colin the biggest of luck on their retirement, and they will forever be missed down The Sarries xx.”
