Lucy & Sam Take Over The Saracens Head

Lucy Swinton and Sam Pratt have taken over as landlords of The Saracen’s Head after Mel and Colin Roberson retired on Saturday after 25 years.

Lucy grew up in Henley and attended Sacred Heart Primary School, Gillotts and The Henley College and has worked at The Three Tuns, The Baskerville Arms and The Stag & Huntsman pubs over the last 9 years.  Sam is from the Gold Coast in Australia originally.  She came to Henley in 2019 after seeing a job advert to work at The Saracen’s online.  Sam said, “I thought I would be move to the UK as I wanted to travel around Europe as I thought it would be easier from here. This obviously didn’t happen when Covid hit.  I’ve been working on and off at The Saracens since then.”  Lucy said, “I started working in pubs as a part-time job whilst at college and didn’t think at the time that I would be running my own pub in a few years.”

Lucy said, “When Mel and Colin were talking about and looking to retire, we always thought about having our own pub.  It is such a great pub, and it was a good opportunity and a pub that we knew well. The timing was right too. Sam added, “It started as hypothetical would it be something we would be interested in.  We weren’t sure that Mel and Colin were serious about retiring.”

Lucy and Sam put together a business plan to Brakspear to get the tenancy.  Lucy said, “They are really good to work with, they offered us a business plan template and guidance.  It’s a pretty perfect model that Mel and Colin have left it in.  Sam, commented, “It’s the sport and the atmosphere that bring people in.”

This Saturday (9 December) Lucy and Sam will be hosting a launch party from 12 noon and there will be live music from Steph Willis from 7.30-9.30pm.  There are plans for more live music and quizzes in the New Year.  Lucy explained, “We’re going to test the water and see what people want.”  Sam added, “When the weather gets warmer we’ll use the large outdoor space more.”  They are also looking to expand the food offering.

Lucy and Sam own Jack Russell/Dachshund cross called Gus who will be the pub mascot and they welcome all well behaved four-legged friends.
