Leisure Centre Serves Up New Pickleball Sport Sessions

The new popular racket sport, pickleball can now be played at Henley Leisure Centre on Saturday afternoons.

Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong with players using paddles to hit a plastic ball between them across a net on a court that is the same size as a badminton court.  Players can play as both singles and doubles.

Russell Trayling is the IPTA qualified coach, coaching the beginners sessions that take place between 2-4pm.  The cost for a session is £6.50.

Russell said, “I’ve been playing for about 2 years now after a friend brought me a paddle back from Canada. I hadn’t played any racquet sports before then.  Pickleball is less technical than tennis and you can get rallies going in an hour.  I started at a club in Eton and fell in love with the sport.  I then went on a coaching course and have been coaching for a year.  I was approached by Better who want to invest in the sport.”

Helen Rhodes who plays said, “I first saw Pickleball being played when I was on holiday in the US and thought it looked like lot of fun. I wasn’t aware it had made it to the UK so as soon as I saw it had come to Henley, I couldn’t wait to give it a try. It’s really good fun, great exercise and easy to pick up.”
