Henley Mermaids to Compete at Climategames

The Henley Mermaids are taking part in ‘The One for the Planet Powered by Climategames’, a multi-sport event in June at Dorney Lake, Windsor.

Henley Mermaids, Laura Reinke and Joan Fennelly are swimming in the first ever in-person Climategames event, where all the activity will fund ecological projects, including removing plastic from the ocean.  The Mermaids will be raising money for WildFish a charity that protects wild fish and the waters.

The One for the Planet takes place on the 16 June and offers participants the unique opportunity to take part in triathlon, duathlon, aquaswim, aquabike, swim and run events while also contributing to global environmental conservation efforts.

Laura and Joan will be competing in the 3K swim.  Mermaid Laura said, “It is fantastic to support such a great initiative.  I love how people are coming up with fabulous ways of helping our planet, it is a win-win, environmental charities get funding, trees get planted, you get fit!  What is not to love?  Joan & I will be swimming in support of our waterways; 25% of the world’s freshwater species are at risk of extinction, becoming extinct at a rate of five times higher than the species that live on land.  Higher temperatures = less oxygen.  Our greed is killing our waterways, they need all the help they can get.  I’d encourage everyone to get involved.”

By hosting The One for the Planet in partnership with OneRace Events, Climategames aims to inspire people to save the planet while they train, and to change the future of sporting events, converting exercise into positive action in a simple, and genuine way.

Martin Lacey, founder of Climategames said, “We are thrilled that the Henley Mermaids will be joining us at The One for the Planet. “It’s great that a local group of swimmers who align with our values are joining us and we are looking forward to having them at the event.”
