Golf Captain’s Day Goes Back to 1920s

Badgemore Park Golf Captain, Melvyn Keen hosted a Texas Scramble with a twist for his Captain’s Day last Saturday.

The twist was that the competition was played by 21 teams with hickory golf clubs dating back to the 1920s.  Gavin Bottrell brought along 50 sets of these clubs and gave a fascinating talk prior to the competition about the history of golf clubs.  Members were encouraged to dress in appropriate 1920s golfing clothes.  Melvyn said, “Everyone looked absolutely splendid and they thoroughly enjoyed using the old clubs and were all astonished at the low scores which were achieved.”

The winners of the main competition were: Tony Bean, Mark Oldfield, Dagmar Oldfield and Les Hines.

There was also a putting competition, which was won by Andy Moyes as well as prizes for the best-dressed man, Andrew Symmonds, and the best-dressed ladies, Sarah Moore and Eileen Paddick (there was only supposed to be one lady prize but it was impossible not to give them both a prize).

The day was tremendous fun and raised a fantastic £1,500 for the Captain’s charity, Cure Usher.
