Countdown to Christmas is On as Mayor Chooses Market Place Tree

Though Christmas might still be two months away, Henley Mayor, Councillor Sarah Miller got into the festive spirit this weekend when she and her family chose the big Christmas tree for Market Place. The 30 foot Nordmann Fir, sponsored by Invesco, has once again been sourced from local Christmas tree experts: the Tree Barn in Christmas Common.

Mayor Sarah Miller, along with her partner, Carolyn, and their two daughters, Ruby and Vivian, had a tough decision to make on Saturday when choosing between the stunning array of trees on offer. They were guided by Andrew Ingram, owner of the Tree Barn, who highlighted the chosen tree for its shape. He said, “It’s a nice even shape. It’s not too fat at the bottom, and not too heavy.”

The winning tree is approximately 30 years old, and has been growing on the Tree Barn’s farm for 25 years. Sarah Miller said, “I like the shape of this. As Andrew said, it’s not too fat and not too thin. It ticks all the boxes for me. It stands out, and I think it’s going to look wonderful in the square. We just need to cover it with lots of lights, and I wonder if we could get someone to sponsor a big star or something on the top.”

She continued, “I want something either on the top of the tree or the top of the Town Hall, but I think we should have something. That’s a call out to any businesses that would like to potentially sponsor a star!”

The Tree Barn, who have supplied Henley’s big tree for many years, grow around 120,000 trees on their grounds. Each year, they plant 17-18,000 new trees, and sell over 14,000. As well as Henley’s centrepiece tree, they have also provided trees for local towns of Wallingford and Thame, and further afield, for 10 Downing St! The Tree Barn’s shop opens this Saturday (30th October), and tree sales commence Saturday 20th November.

Whilst Henley’s Christmas light switch-on was a low-key affair in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions, this year’s tree looks destined for a much more exciting future. As per Henley tradition, the big tree lights will be switched on at the Christmas Festival on Friday 26 November — only one month to wait!
