Probus Club Welcomes Graham Horn to Talk about Kilimanjaro Climb

Henley Probus Club welcomed Graham Horn of Blue Badge Tourist Guide to their meeting this month, held on October 10th.

After the Club Chairman’s welcome, and reports by the Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary, Graham Horn gave a talk entitled Climbing Kilimanjaro – To the Roof of Africa. Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcano at 5895 metres, is the highest mountain in Africa and is situated in Tanzania. Graham’s talk covered his personal experience of climbing from the base camp in the Kilimanjaro, through rainforests, moorland terrain, and then through volcanic terrain to the summit (which is, in effect, a volcanic crater). The journey — a total of 30 miles — took significantly longer on the way up than down; climbing to the summit took 4.5 days, whilst the return journey took only 1.5 days.

The Chairman thanked Gordon for his talk which was warmly appreciated by the Club members.

The next Probus Club event will take place on October 27th, and this will be a visit to the Mill at Sonning. The Probus Club Christmas Lunch will be held at Badgemore Park on December 13th. Discussions are underway regarding possible events in 2023 including a visit to the Eden project.

Henley Probus meets at Badgemore Park Golf Club on the second Tuesday of every month; it starts with an informal gathering of its members (plus visitors) for a discussion and coffee, with the formal meeting commencing at 1130 which is followed by a lunch. If anyone is interested in joining the Club, please make themselves known to Roger Griffiths our membership secretary (phone 01491575137 or email regriffiths@waitrose.com) or any club member you may know.
