Hawks Away to Guernsey for First Match of the Year

Henley Hawks start 2023, making the long journey to the Channel Islands on Saturday to take on Guernsey Raiders in their latest National 2 (East) fixture. There are not many tougher away trips than Guernsey, especially in midwinter when the weather can be rough as the Hawks have found out in the past.

The kick off at Footes Lane in St Peter Port, Guernsey is 3.00pm.

The Hawks will expect a stern test in Guernsey as the Raiders, although they lost their first three games of the campaign, have since consolidated and are now ninth in the league table and have proven to be tough opponents for most teams so far this season. They have been one of the better sides to visit Henley this campaign with the Hawks squeezing home at Dry Leas back in September 28-24.

The Hawks have won their last two games but have not played since the 10th December when they won at Canterbury 19-14. With two away games to start the new year (next week at Barnes), Henley will want to start 2023 in a positive way to put pressure on the teams at the top of the league.

There is an exciting, strong look to the side that is travelling to the Channel Islands.

Head coach Luke Allen has selected a reliable, experienced pack with front row regulars Dave Manning, Tom Emery and Rory Mason along with second rowers Sam Lunnon and Ben Harrison all starting. The back row of Tom Hall, Scott White and Tom Vooght should ensure plenty of competition at the breakdown and a chance of some quality possession.

The backs have a good attacking threat with Louis Flynn teaming up with Adam Hakimian in the centre, and speedsters Reuben Norville and Ryan Crowley linking with full back George Wood. With Ewan Fenley and Max Titchener at half back, the Hawks have a side, which on their day, could trouble any side on their day.

The bench is also strong with Morgan Macrae, Ollie Frostick, Zac Taylor, Seb Scott and Will Crow providing cover.
