Henley Lions Presented with Award for Helping Those With Disabilities

Henley Lions Club was awarded the 2023 Leo Plumley Award in recognition of the club’s contribution to helping those with disabilities in their community.

The award is given to a club, or group of clubs, by Lions District 105SC which includes all those Lions clubs in the south central part of England. Henley Lions were selected for the support that we have given to the members of Henley Bluebells, a local dementia support group. Henley Lions sponsor trips for Bluebells members and their carers on the Rivertime, the specially adapted boat which is based here in Henley. The award was presented by Zone Chairman John Shepherd to Lion Ian Tritton. It was noted that Henley Lions support a number of local disabled causes including the Regatta for the Disabled and the South Oxfordshire Mencap group. The club was also heavily involved in supporting the building of the Rivertime and, along with other Lions Clubs, sponsored the dash assembly from which the boat is controlled.

Ian said, “Absolutely great to receive the award in recognition of the many events Henley Lions make happen for the disabled our area. The real reward is the smiles on their faces! The most recent event was Bishopswood Christmas Annual Party at Phyllis Court Club, organised and funded by Henley Lions. One of the best ever!  The school Deputy Head was amazed to see how well Daniel the entertainer engaged with the pupils. He had many of the pupils at the front joining in with him and those that weren’t at the front could still join in from their seats. Even the older pupils were smiling, laughing, and joining in!”
